Financial Literacy

FAMU Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD) - Financial Ambassadors

The FAMU SFEPD Financial Ambassadors program is a student-led initiative at Florida A&M University that aims to enhance financial literacy among students and the broader community. Comprised of eight well-trained students, the program is part of a national effort coordinated by the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD) across 35 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Mentored by business school professors, the ambassadors design and deliver workshops and presentations that increase financial knowledge, targeting both the HBCU student population and their surrounding communities.

The program's success, highlighted by winning the prestigious Top Program Award, is attributed to its wide-reaching initiatives. These include workshops during professional leadership classes, participation in university-wide events like the Global Leadership Conference and Financial Literacy Week, and outreach activities in the community. The ambassadors' efforts have significantly expanded financial education at FAMU, from on-campus events like the Divine 9 Financial Literacy Brain Bowl and workshops for student athletes, to off-campus presentations in local schools and organizations.

Bridging Knowledge Gaps and Elevating Student Success

The program is crucial for FAMU students, many of whom are beginning to assume significant financial obligations, such as student loans. By providing targeted financial education, the ambassadors help students manage their finances effectively, setting them up for future financial success. Despite many students being overconfident in their financial knowledge, research indicates a gap between confidence and actual understanding, making the program's mission even more critical.

Students interested in joining or participating in the program can engage through various campus activities, follow events on social media, or reach out to program mentors for opportunities to become an ambassador. Winning the Top Program Award has elevated FAMU's reputation in the financial education community, drawing attention from major financial services firms and government entities, and showcasing FAMU's commitment to financial literacy.
